Snowbirds are, typically, retire/semi-retired folks from Northern climes that wish to leave the cold and snow behind for the Winter months. They still have permanent roots, family, and friends up North but come to Florida for the moderate temperatures and year-round swimming, golf, tennis, etc. Some people come down because of seasonal health or even financial (tax) reasons.
Their “season” runs from October until Easter (April) with the heaviest population from New Years until April 1st. Here in Brevard County and, more specifically, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, and the rest of the barrier island, the population can increase as much as a third.
I wish to note that, while a misinformed minority of people do not want the Winter invasion, I find that I cannot wait for them to return every year. A vast majority of snowbirds are wonderful people who just want to get away. We have become friends with many and am saddened when they leave. We love their personalities, stories, and friendship.
